Premature Ejaculation

What is it?

This is when someone ejaculates either before or very early into sexual intercourse, or simply before his partner intended.

How is it brought on?

Premature ejaculation has a plethora of possible causes. Psychological conditions such as low body image confidence and stress, as well as physiological conditions such as erectile dysfunction, abnormal hormone levels, and genetics could play a role in the development of premature ejaculation.

How to treat it

Treatments for premature ejaculation vary heavily due to the subjectivity of the disorder. Some of the more common ones are:

  • Behavioral therapy – Sometimes therapy or masturbating an hour or two before sex is enough to extend the time before ejaculation.
  • Physical techniques – Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles that are responsible for holding a release from the penis can also help with premature ejaculation. These muscles can be strengthened by practicing contracting the muscles a few times a day. Another technique is to squeeze the head of the penis right before ejaculation until the feeling passes.
  • Oral medication – Certain medications such as painkillers and antidepressants have a side effect of delayed ejaculation, which matches up perfectly for those with premature ejaculation. Some medications that help with erectile dysfunction have also been known to help with premature ejaculation. With these drugs, however, it is important to look at any other side effects and talk to your doctor before trying this option.
