Broken Capillaries on the Chest and Face: Causes and Treatment

Broken capillaries are small red, pink or purple vessels that show through the skin, most often on the chest, nose and cheeks. They’re very common and usually harmless, but they can make skin look blotchy, sun-damaged or older. At Innova Skin & Laser Center at Sleep and Wellness Medical Associates in Lawrence Township, a physician-led team evaluates your skin and treats broken capillaries with IPL photo-facial technology.

What Are Broken Capillaries?

Despite the name, these vessels usually aren’t broken. They’re tiny capillaries near the skin’s surface that have become permanently widened, so they stay visible. The medical term is telangiectasia. They’re also called spider veins when they appear as fine, branching red lines.

Why Do Broken Blood Vessels Appear ?

The upper chest, or décolletage, gets years of sun exposure but thinner skin than the face. That makes it one of the most common places for broken capillaries to appear. Common causes include:

  • Cumulative sun damage, which weakens vessel walls and the collagen around them
  • Genetics and fair or sensitive skin
  • Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
  • Aging skin that becomes thinner and more transparent
  • Rosacea, which also causes flushing and redness on the face
  • Heat, alcohol and long-term use of strong topical steroids
Sun damage on the chest often shows up as a mix of redness, broken vessels, brown spots and crepey lines. If that sounds familiar, see our pages on chest wrinkles and brown spots and sun spots.

On the Face and Nose

On the face, broken capillaries tend to appear around the nose, cheeks and chin. They’re often linked to sun exposure, rosacea, genetics or aggressive skin care. If you also have frequent flushing, stinging or persistent redness, read about rosacea treatment, since managing it can reduce new vessels from forming.

How We Treat Broken Capillaries

ICON® IPL Photofacial

Our main treatment for broken capillaries is the ICON Photofacial (IPL). Pulses of intense light are absorbed by the red pigment in the vessels. That heats and gradually closes them, and the body then clears them away. IPL also targets brown sun spots at the same time, which makes it a good fit for sun-damaged chests.

Other Options for Stubborn Vessels

Larger or deeper vessels may need a different laser setting or a combination approach. Your provider will recommend what suits your skin.

Managing Rosacea-Related Redness

If rosacea is driving your broken capillaries, combining IPL with a skincare and trigger-management plan helps keep results longer. See our comprehensive skincare routines.

When to Have Red Spots Checked by a Provider ?

Most broken capillaries are cosmetic. Some red spots look similar but are something else. You should see a medical provider if you notice any of these:
• Spots with a raised red center and legs radiating outward (spider angiomas), especially if several appear quickly
• New red spots together with other symptoms such as fatigue, easy bruising, yellowing skin or swelling
• A spot that bleeds, grows or changes

Because we are an internal medicine practice as well as a laser center, our physicians can evaluate these concerns and order tests if needed before any cosmetic treatment. [CLINICAL REVIEW]

What to Expect During an IPL Session

After your skin is cleansed, you and your provider wear protective eyewear. A cool gel may be applied, and the handpiece delivers light pulses across the treatment area. Most patients describe the feeling as a quick snap, like a rubber band. A session on the face or chest usually takes under an hour.

Sessions, Downtime and Results

Many patients see improvement after the first session, and a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart usually gives the best result. Treated vessels may look darker or more visible for a few days before they fade. Mild redness and swelling usually settle quickly, and most people return to normal activities the same day.

Cost of Broken Capillary Treatment

Cost depends on the size of the area treated, such as face, chest or both, and on how many sessions you need. Package pricing may be available. You’ll receive a clear quote at your consultation, and we offer financing options including CareCredit. [PRICING: add ranges if the practice wants them shown]

How to Help Prevent New Broken Capillaries ?

• Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily on the face, neck and chest
• Avoid very hot showers and long sauna sessions
• Use gentle skincare and skip harsh scrubs
• Manage rosacea triggers if you have rosacea
IPL removes existing vessels, but new ones can form over time, so sun protection keeps results looking their best. [CLINICAL REVIEW]

FAQs

K
L
What causes broken capillaries on the chest?

The most common cause is years of sun exposure, which weakens the small vessels and the collagen around them. Genetics, fair skin, hormonal changes such as pregnancy, and thinning skin with age also play a role.

K
L
Are broken blood vessels on the chest serious?

Most are harmless and purely cosmetic. Some red spots can be linked to other health conditions, however. If several spider-like spots appear quickly, or you notice them along with symptoms such as fatigue, easy bruising or yellowing skin, have a medical provider evaluate them.

K
L
Do broken capillaries go away on their own?

Usually not. Once a capillary has widened it tends to stay visible, although redness from temporary flushing can fade. Treatment such as IPL is the most reliable way to reduce them.

K
L
Can IPL remove broken blood vessels on the chest and face?

Yes. IPL is a well-established treatment for small visible vessels on the face, neck and chest. It also improves brown sun spots in the same session.

K
L
How many IPL sessions will I need?

It depends on how many vessels you have and how large they are. Many patients need a short series spaced several weeks apart. [Dr. Siddique to confirm the typical number] [CLINICAL REVIEW]

K
L
Does IPL hurt, and is there downtime?

Most patients feel a brief snapping sensation with each pulse, and a cooling gel helps. Treated areas may be pink or slightly swollen for a short time, and vessels can look darker for a few days before fading. Most people go back to normal activities the same day

K
L
Is IPL safe for all skin tones?

IPL works best on lighter skin tones. For deeper skin tones, your provider will assess whether IPL is appropriate or recommend a safer alternative. [CLINICAL REVIEW]
