Peyronie’s Disease

What is it?

Peyronie’s disease constitutes difficulty in urinating and painful erections that are often associated with irregular shaping or curving of the penis, leading to interference with sexual intercourse.

How to treat it

Mild cases do not require treatment, whereas in some cases the condition improves over time to the point that treatment is not necessary.

However, it is best to contact your doctor to determine whether or treatment is necessary for your situation. If diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease, some treatment options include:

  • Pills – Pills such as Potaba increase the flexibility of the skin and soften plaques, diminishing the curvature characteristic of the disease.
  • Shots – Injectable verapamil or collagenases break down the plaque that causes penile curvature.
  • GAINSWave and P-shot® – This treatment method is similar to that used for patients of erectile dysfunction in which sound waves are used to break down the random-patterned mesh of collagen that has developed in the regions of the penis affected by Peyronie’s disease in order to allow the collagen fibers to be rebuilt correctly by nearby connective tissue cells called fibroblasts. The PRP administration with P-shot® provides growth factors and molecules that activate the fibroblasts to increase their collagen creation, ultimately leading to the regeneration of penile tissue and a hardy treatment for Peyronie’s disease.
  • Surgery – There are two main surgical procedures that are done to correct Peyronie’s disease. The first is to remove the scar tissue causing the issue and replace it with a tissue graft, and the second is to alter the tissue on the opposite side of the penis as the area of interest, correcting the curvature.

How is it brought on?

Penile curvature is caused by an accumulation of scar tissue inside the penis that results in a misshapen erection that could be painful during sexual intercourse and possibly result in erectile dysfunction. This scar tissue could build up over time naturally due to genetic reasons or could come from past injury to the penis as well as the natural cycle of aging.
