It is inevitable that with age the condition of the skin gets worse. Fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet all develop due to the decrease of collagen and elastin in the skin that is natural with age. Whether due to aging itself, UV exposure, or health-related issues, with time the skin becomes worn and various imperfections develop.

Hydrofacial, also known as hydrodermabrasion, is a cutting-edge technique for improving skin condition. The name sounds a bit like microdermabrasion, and that’s because the basic mechanism of action for the two treatments and the general effects are pretty similar but with some key differences.

Microdermabrasion works by sanding off the outer layer of the skin and suctioning out dead cells using a vacuum, exfoliating the skin and stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. This process is done with a diamond or crystal tip of a simple handpiece. Hydrodermabrasion also peels away the top layer of the skin, but instead of using abrasive crystals it uses a supersonic jet of water. Not only does this have the same exfoliating effect as microdermabrasion, but it hydrates the skin and improves circulation in the treated area. Not to mention that a water jet is gentler on the skin and doesn’t aggravate underlying skin conditions, which can happen rarely with microdermabrasion.

Like I mentioned before, there are similarities. Like microdermabrasion, it deals with blackheads, lines and wrinkles, acne, stretch marks, skin tone, texture, and pigmentation. Considering the breadth of skin conditions it mitigates and its rejuvenating effects, these exfoliating treatments are very popular. Since hydrofacials are gentler, even people with more sensitive skin can get the youthful, clearer skin they want.

Studies show that hydrodermabrasion is a strong non-surgical option for facial rejuvenation, since it gets rid of dead cells, and allows nutrients to flow deep into the skin.

The possible side effects for hydrofacials are similar to microdermabrasion, but lower in likelihood: redness or swelling in the applied area. There’s no downtime after treatment, but since the outer layer of the skin is peeled off, it’s recommended not to be in direct sunlight immediately after treatment.
